GEMS HYRIS
Gas and Energy Management Software for Hybrid Systems
Renewable energy and green hydrogen are essential resources for achieving global decarbonisation targets.
GEMS HYRIS is an integrated system developed for the production, management, and storage of green hydrogen using solar energy. The project aims to optimise the use of renewable sources to ensure sustainable energy autonomy, even in emergency conditions. The system combines long-life batteries (sodium-nickel batteries – Na/NiCl2) with PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysers, enabling storage in the form of electricity as well as low-pressure hydrogen. GEMS HYRIS has also been tested in real-world scenarios and showcased at international events such as CES 2025 in Las Vegas (USA).

Current limitations:
Electrolysers are critical systems that are not yet sufficiently efficient or competitive when operated with inherently intermittent renewable energy sources. They must be managed as an integrated system to avoid excessive consumption, which would otherwise reduce their profitability.
At present, there is a lack of tools capable of effectively managing and enhancing the efficiency of a plant that integrates renewable energy generation, hydrogen production, and the efficient use of energy storage

Our objectives:
To improve the overall efficiency of a system composed of a PEM electrolyser, an electrochemical battery, and a photovoltaic plant (HYRIS) through:
- A reduction in water consumption required for hydrogen production
- A reduction in electricity consumption required for hydrogen production
- An improvement of the overall plant efficiency, with particular attention to start-up and shutdown phases
- The enhancement of the management of electricity produced by the photovoltaic system and its use in hydrogen generation, through the use of batteries as a ‘regulating instrument’

Our solution:
An advanced software solution for monitoring and managing a hybrid system that includes:
- A renewable electricity generation source (photovoltaic)
- A power conversion system (PCS) that controls and manages the flow of electrical energy
- A hydrogen generation system (electrolyser)
- A battery pack for electrical energy storage (Na-NiCl2 technology)
Obiettivo principale dell’operazione.
